Where Joy Found Them: A Day of Valor in Pasay Cemetery

On a quiet Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan), while many remembered stories of courage, the Chummy Chum team chose to live it in a different way.

They had set out, as they often did, to bring smiles to children in need. But that day took an unexpected turn. When they visited a community recently devastated by fire, they learned that several families had moved somewhere nearby—into a cemetery in Pasay. Without pause, the team followed.

There, among tombstones and narrow paths, they were met not with hesitation, but with warmth. A community leader welcomed them, and soon the space came alive with anticipation. One mother stepped forward to help, carefully listing every child’s name so no one would be left out.

Though the space was small, the joy filled every corner. Laughter rang out as the games began, and when Chummy Chum appeared, the children’s faces instantly brightened. They danced, played, and embraced a moment that let them forget their hardships, even just for a while. They had no phones to capture the day, but what they took with them was far more meaningful—memories of joy that would stay with them.

As the day ended, gratitude filled the air. In a place marked by hardship, kindness had made space for joy. And in that moment, the team was reminded that valor is not only found in history—it lives in compassion, in showing up, and in caring for those who need it most.

Chummy Chum continues its mission of bringing hope to children across the metro. Those who wish to help share joy with children most in need are welcome to be part of the journey—sometimes, all it takes is simply reaching out and connecting with the foundation.

With thanks to the team from SM City Sucat, anonymous A.Y., undergarments by ELI,  and all donors of pre-loved toys and clothes who made this day possible.
