Just like last year, Ms. Brenda chose to celebrate her birthday by giving — this time, to children with disabilities at the historic Hospicio de San Jose, founded in 1810.
It was a beautiful coincidence. While Ms. Brenda was looking for a group to share her love with, the hospice was also seeking someone to help brighten the children’s day during National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week. Through the Chummy Chum Foundation, they found each other — and quickly organized a joyful charity event.
As the team headed out, the skies were clear. But soon, heavy rain poured and the streets flooded fast. Despite the challenging weather and ankle-deep water, the team made it safely and set everything up — because the show must go on, especially for the kids!
One by one, the children arrived, guided by their caregivers. Their eyes lit up at the sight of colorful booths, yummy food, fun games, toys, and special gifts. The day kicked off with a prayer, followed by games designed for both kids and caregivers to enjoy together. Then came the highlight: Chummy Chum arrived dancing, spreading smiles and laughter. The children giggled, clapped, and cheered — they felt seen, loved, and celebrated.
After the show, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal. Each child received a toy and a special gift to take home. The hospice also received a week’s supply of rice, fruits, vegetables, and meat — a gift of nourishment for all.
Though the moment was brief, it left a lasting mark on Ms. Brenda’s heart, and on the hearts of the children she shared her day with.
Happiest birthday, Ms. Brenda! Thank you for your big heart, and for turning your special day into a celebration of love, joy, and giving.
